Welcome to the

Bren Herrera Foundation

We are excited to welcome you to the Bren Herrera Foundation, a service-based nonprofit organization committed to serving underrepresented communities across the DMV area in the nations capital. We serve with empathy, dedication and love.

"Service is deeply personal to me. As an immigrant from Cuba, I’ve witnessed the sacrifices my parents made, and experienced first-hand, how food scarcity can adversely impact lives. That awareness guides everything I do, because no one—especially a child—should ever go without food. At the Bren Herrera Foundation, we believe in the power of a healthy community.”

Bren + Friends Serve DC

The Bren & Friends Serve program, first started in 2015, and led by Bren and her incredible team of family, friends, chefs and volunteers, is dedicated to serving hot, day of cooked meals to the homeless in the Washington, DC, area on Christmas Day. Our mission is to provide a sense of love and warmth, creating a holiday experience that mirrors the comfort and joy shared within our own families. Through this annual event, we aim to treat our community members with dignity, allowing them to feel seen and valued on a day when the world celebrates something so meaningful.

As our signature event enters our 9th year, we are excited to continue growing our efforts and to feed more people, not only on Christmas Day, but also during Thanksgiving and into the new year, when loneliness and lack of food are palpable. We are excited about our 2024 program and look forward to your support.

About Our Founder

Bren Herrera is a celebrated culinary artist, TV host, author, speaker and passionate community advocate known for her work on ‘Culture Kitchen’ and her dedication to cultural representation and inclusion. Bren’s advocacy and awareness of community needs started when she was a child and started honing in while working in corporate law. There she did important pro bono work for the AIDS community in Washington DC, and later producing night events in Atlanta. Her passion for serving under privileged and underrepresented communities started building there. In 2008, after the devastating tornado that crushed Haiti and the tsunami that took millions of lives in Japan, Bren formed and started hosting culinary events and fundraisers to provide aid relief to groups needing assistance.

For almost a decade, Bren supported Share Our Strength and it’s food program, No Kid Hungry, as a volunteer chef and social advocate, developing and offering food instruction and classes to men and women on government assistance.

Bren is a Board of Trustee member of the IDEA fund, an alumni-based non-profit organization, supporting DEI efforts at the University of Virginia.
